Heather, it means either making something unclear – or saying something but no one understands – or to confuse someone.

Why does a elephant have a trunk?

Only the second question and you’re really testing me – as far as I know, elephants extinct cousins developed them to use as snorkels. These ancestors lived in the water, possibly a bit like hippos, and the trunk may have helped them with their watery ways. Read more here or here.

As well as this, elephants use their trunks for eating, drinking (by squirting water into their mouths), fighting, pulling down trees, picking things up… all sorts. Which is quite cool for a nose.

This year’s Olympics in London will be the 30th Summer Olympic Games. The 30 includes three that have been cancelled due to World Wars: 1916, 1940, and 1944.

The 2010 Olympics in Vancouver was the 23rd Winter Olympic Games. The 23 includes two also canceled by World War II: 1940 and 1944.

So, in total, there have been 53 Olympic Games since 1896.

I don’t know how many times the Ancient Games were held – and I don’t think anyone knows!

why does the earth orbit the sun?

    Reply

    • Mr Pitts
      April 20, 2012 @ 2:08 pm

It is because the gravity of the Sun keeps it in its orbit – just like the Moon orbits the Earth because of the pull of Earth’s gravity, the Earth orbits the Sun because of the pull of the Sun’s gravity.

    why is the world round?

    Reply

    • Mr Pitts
      May 3, 2012 @ 3:28 pm

Roundness is because of gravity. Individual particles started attracting each other together with gravity. As more and more particles gathered, they compressed themselves into a shape which allowed them to be as small as possible (due to gravity). The pulling in force of gravity meant that it had to be a sphere.

That’s a hard one to answer. Having read a few pages about it for you to try and find an answer, I’m very confused! This page and this page are quite clear. If you don’t want to read, there are between 189 and 196 independent countries in the world today

OK. Leaves are green because of a thing called chlorophyll which it needs to be able to change light into energy to grow and live (this is called photosynthesis). The leaves also contain the chemical carotene which has a yellow colouring.

Carotene is in the leaves all year, but is covered up by the green of the chlorophyll.

As autumn approaches and temperatures, especially those at night, begin to drop sharply, the chlorophyll breaks down and reveals the other pigments within the leaf (such as the carotene) that aren’t affected by the cooler temperatures.

I think that answers both your questions Nieve.

Well, the planets are kept in their orbits by gravity, so they can’t really move unless something knocks them out of place – a large asteroid may hit them and move them, for example.

Planets can’t really grow as far as I know either, unless they get built on!

I guess they do it just to let other chickens know where they are! I suppose they also do it to say they are awake. They crow all the time, not just in the morning… a friend of mine lives next door to a load of chickens, and they can get very annoying.

I found this online and it helps to answer it: “If you didn’t know how old you were, then you’d still be the same age as you actually are. I know this doesn’t make sense, but think of it this way… Let’s say you’re 21 years old, but you don’t know you’re 21. You’d still be 21 years old, regardless of the fact that you don’t know how old you are.”

I don’t act my age a lot of the time either…

Well it’s not for food, as they eat mostly from bushes near the ground – especially when it hasn’t rained for a while and there are no leaves on trees. It’s mostly used for fighting with. Giraffes will fight with their necks for the attention of female giraffes.

    why is the sea blue?

    Reply

    • Mr Pitts
      June 28, 2012 @ 4:12 pm

The sea is blue because water absorbs colours in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colours in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see.

The sea could also look green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the water.

Is there gravity under water, because if there is why do fish float and not stick to the ground?

    Reply

    • Mr Pitts
      February 5, 2013 @ 9:46 pm

Shannon there is gravity everywhere on Earth – and on the Moon! Water pushes upwards, this is called upthrust, which balances out gravity sometimes and is why things can float. Fish also have special bladders of air inside them which help them sink or float when they want (I don’t really know how they work though…)

The Bible tells us that the heavens and Earth were created by God from nothingness. (Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”)

Scientists believe that dust and meteorites left over from the formation of the Sun came together over millions of years to form a planet that eventually became the Earth. All other parts left orbiting the Sun became the other planets, asteroids, and comets.

You need to decide which of these two main ideas you believe, Emily.
